Rimu Lodge is a luxury boutique lodge situated on the West Coast of the South Island of New Zealand.
The small village of Rimu was named after the tall rimu forest that once stood as far as the eye could see. Seddon Terrace Road was named after the Hon. Richard John Seddon, a goldminer who later became the Premier of New Zealand (Prime Minister).
In 1882 gold was discovered in Rimu. Shortly after this there were 500 miners on the field, and not long after there were six hotels, two banks, two bakeries, a butcher, two churches and a convent school in the town. About 1890 gold was discovered in Seddon Terrace Road and over the next 50 years gold became an important part of life here. There are a number of old mine shafts and tunnels which have often collapsed as "sink unders". A sawmill was built in 1899 across the road from Rimu Lodge and was devoted almost exclusively to the cutting of silver pine (rimu). This sawmill has since been dismantled and moved to another location on the West Coast
Today Rimu is a commuter town for Hokitika and a lifestyle residence for people from all over New Zealand.
